Juuichigatsu no Gimnasium (11月のギムナジウム)

(From Baka-Updates) A year after the very first shounen-ai story, Sanruumo ni te (In the Sunroom) by Takemiya Keiko, was published in 1970, Hagio Moto published another short shounen-ai story, Juuichi-gatsu no gimunajiumu (The November Gymnasium). As the second shounen-ai  manga ever published, “The November Gymnasium” focuses on chaste, yearning love between boys at a prestigious German boys’ school. This is also often cited as the first commercially published shounen-ai.

After “The November Gymnasium”, Hagio Moto published  her first volume-length shounen-ai in 1974, Thomas no Shinzou (Heart of Thomas).

Thomas no Shinzou (トーマの心臓)

(From Baka-Updates) As the winter drew to a close, German boarding school student Thomas Werner died in one morning. His cynical roommate Oscar found himself watching over Juli’s fragile mental state while keeping his own feelings for Juli under wrapped. Then new student Eric entered the school – and he has an uncanny resemblance to the deceased Thomas…

Albeit the success of Thomas no Shinzou, the first real commercially successful shounen-ai was Takemiya Keiko’s ground-breaking Kaze to Ki no Uta (also known as “Song of the Wind and Trees”, or “Poem of Wind and Tree”), a story that ran for 17 volumes since 1976.

Gilbert Cocteau is, like Serge, the orphaned son of a wealthy family, and is infamous at Lacombrade for his beautiful and delicate appearance, lack of dedication to schoolwork, and habit of prostituting himself to other students. He has no intention to connect with any of his classmates, instead devoting himself to his uncle Auguste. Due to a shortage of living space, Serge and Gilbert become roommates even though Gilbert’s antisocial nature has in the past made it impossible for him to room with anybody. Serge, being sociable and idealistic, is determined to be friends with Gilbert; Gilbert is only interested in either being able to manipulate Serge or push him away entirely. To the surprise of both of the boys, however, the two eventually form a deep, albeit generally dismal, bond that leads to a romantic connection.
