List – Historical Shoujos (Japanese)

Please note that I created this page originally for my purpose of data collection only. Now that this post has started to pick up some audiences, I WILL re-design this page at some point to include more information (in english!). But for now, please bear with it and see this as a “cover dump” for Japanese historical shoujo, if you like ^^:

Arigato gozaimasu!

For more extensive details about Japanese history, please visit here or here.

This page shows some examples of shoujo manga which were set in the historical Japan.

  1. Thank you for such a handy compilation! I have a handful of favorites listed here that I’ve read already (though I haven’t finished them all!), and this will be a good reference for new period pieces to read. ^_^

      • Thank you for taking a look at my blog! ^_^ I’ll keep at it.

I’ve had at least some direct exposure to at least 14 of these series, and right now I’m in the slow process of reading Tenjou no Niji, Kaze Hikaru, and Yokohama Monogatari. Mukashi Oboro Naru Otoko Arikeri, Harutsuge Komachi, and Ryou are some of my biggest favorites from over my years of reading shoujo manga!

      • oh my, quite a selection you’ve got there! So good to see Kaze Hikaru (also my fav!) being mentioned too; enjoy reading! 🙂
I am reading Tenjou now as well! 😄
I was upto the end of its part I when Uno-sarara became the empress….

      • I’m just a few volumes ahead of you in Tenjou, then–I’m on volume 18 and have been borrowing them from someone, but she doesn’t have anything after this point! It’s the kind of manga you need a good chunk of time to sit down and read, and overwhelming as it is at first, it sticks in your head really well.
On the other hand, with Kaze Hikaru it’s easy to read a few volumes in a day! I don’t have access to it right now, but I’m at the point where Saitou has (finally!) figured everything out about Sei.

      • Tell me about it!
The last time I read Tenjou, I had about 5 days to swallow 20 volumes in one go as I borrowed them from a local manga rental shop! Definitely a series that deserve to be read at a slow pace 🙂

I particularly like the early part of the series (the first 8 volumes or so), especially on the relationship between Prince Naka, Oama and Nukata (that was the sole reason I wanted to read it! hehe), as well as the depictions on the entangled relationship between Princess Toji, Prince Takechi and Otomo – so tragic, yet so beautiful! -_-

KH’s Saitou san is the best! His “special fondness” and reactions on Sei made KH so fun to read!! hehehe….

        Enjoy reading!

    • Hi. Thanks for stopping by.
Re. the titles you wanted to read. I made a post titled, “Where to buy/read vintage manga”. You may have to dig through my previous posts for that, but that’d be a good starting point I guess 🙂

      Good luck hunting!

  3. Excellent list with so many titles I’d never heard of. I enjoy reading 70s and 80s shoujo manga, not necessarily historical, and now I have another 50 titles to look up. Oh my ^_^;; I hope you get round to the summaries one day so I can winnow some out. I’m already going to skip all the ones based on Genji Monogatari (I hate that guy, sorry :p)

    Keep up the blogging!

    • thanks 🙂

PS. I really dislike THAT guy too ^^
But the manga is still a real gem, in the sense that the artist did a grand job depicting the narratives and emotions behind….. Give it a go; don’t let Genji spoil the fun! 😉
