[Feature posts], [MANGA TALK]

Where to begin? The most classic shoujos of all times….

Ever wonder which ones are the “best”/ “most classic” shoujos of all times?

Ever wonder where to start, as you become interested in reading an “old-school” shoujo all of a sudden?

Below were the “best classic shoujos of all times” of various genres, chosen by a selected number of editors (and readers) in Japan – perhaps it can be used a good starting point?…. Just be prepared to see a VERY long reading list below : )

“編集会議” Editors Review(?), April 2003. (Note the question mark ^^)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Note: Besides nostalgic reasons, this section really means something special to me, for the lists below somehow inspired me into creating [Manga Talk]!

But… meh~! Despite my “many” pathetic attempts, I have now run out of ideas of how to make this page looking more presentable (i.e. easy-reading at least). The best I could do was to throw in some images and story descriptions, which only proved to be unproductive since info could be found elsewhere anywhere…

So if anyone has any great idea on the page layout for this entry….PLEASE drop me a note – I will be SO glad to hear from anyone for this matter ^^ Aligato!!!!

He begins to attend Lacombrade Academy, his father’s alma mater, in the hopes that there he will find a place to belong. Gilbert Cocteau is, like Serge, the orphaned son of a wealthy family, and is infamous at Lacombrade for his beautiful and delicate appearance, lack of dedication to schoolwork, and habit of prostituting himself to other students. He has no intention to connect with any of his classmates, instead devoting himself to his uncle Auguste. Due to a shortage of living space, Serge and Gilbert become roommates even though Gilbert’s antisocial nature has in the past made it impossible for him to room with anybody. Serge, being sociable and idealistic, is determined to be friends with Gilbert; Gilbert is only interested in either being able to manipulate Serge or push him away entirely.

11 thoughts on “Where to begin? The most classic shoujos of all times….

  1. Surprised! I, almost completely, disagree with this selection.
    How about you?

    Posted by mattari | January 27, 2012, 3:21 am
    • P.S.: Well, “almost completely” may have been a bit harsh wording.
One of the “electoral college” Suzuki Megumi was the champ of a trivial pursuit TV show about shoujo. Most of the picked titles are surely well known. So the electors must have pondered a lot for the selection.
On the contrary, I admit there are many that I reject before actual reading only because the art does not seem to fit my taste or because I missed the good timing to read. For example, Seito Shokun by Shoji Yoko. I didn’t like the art (especially that triangular mouth of the heroine) and the too-positive/cheerful atmosphere when it was popular. (I read a part of it, and I also saw the movie based on the manga.)
And of course there are some that I agree with the recommendation.
However, it is still true that I want to cry out “are you serious!?”. They must have been able to make a much better selection… For instance, the love story part is the biggest category in shoujo. Why do they have to pick up “Lovers’ Kiss” by Yoshida Akimi and “Peach Girl” by Ueda Miwa? LK is a really good piece with literature-like atmosphere. But it’s rather like a series of sketches, and I think there are other pieces that are more suitable to be picked up here. PG is the same.

      • HI mattari! Always good to see your return here with great comments : )

I have to be fair, there was a lot of titles, featured in this article, which I have not come across in prior…. hence it would be unfair of me to make any review/ judgement on those series.

On the other hand, I thought this selection would serve as a great guide and an extensive list for any retro shoujo readers (in particular the beginners).

The other point to this article, was the fact that it highlighted the variety of shoujo manga, or in other words, the complexity of genres under the shoujo manga category alone! For instance, “Lovers Kiss” and “Peach Girl”, both of which tagged under the “romance category”. As many would have noticed, the structures of the stories, drawing styles and etc are completely different between the two, and yet, the main themes of both series are the same, i.e. centred on the romances evolved between the characters. Again, this highlights the complexity of a genre within itself – there are different kinds of “romances” in different scenarios, e.g. from a sweet teenage/ puppy love to a (slightly) more mature high-school/ urban romance….

Nonetheless, it is worth noting that the selection process of this “best/ classic” manga list was neither clear nor transparent to us, i.e. what were the criteria/ how was the “best/ classic” defined in this case?….

Therefore, I could only assume that this selection of shoujo manga was most likely based on what were perceived as the the most popular, or remarkable/ influential to each individual selector at that time…. hence it goes back to our very fundamental point – each series must be judged on its own merit ; )

  2. Ok, here’s my confession.
There are few titles where I also went, “WhAT?! WHY?!”… but not because they were not good enough in my opinion, since most likely I have not read them before. (…. okay okay! I admit there were indeed some which did bore me to tears!!!!!!)

…. Anyhow I thought there might be a few other series deserves to be in the list which unfortunately were not, e.g. Kaze Hikaru! (*wink*)

Digress… to received a feedback here actually made me realise the fact that this post is WAY OVERDUE for an update!!!!!!! gomenasai!!…… ><:

  3. @mattari: By the way, you mentioned a TV show on shoujo manga… were you referring to “BSマンガ夜話” by any chance?

    Posted by xkazemg | February 2, 2012, 7:26 am
    • That’s “TV Champion” on TV Tokyo. This series was basically a contest of maniacs, each time of different genres. They picked up shoujo manga one time only, and I missed it. But when I saw the shounen manga maniacs’ part, it was really funny and tough.

      • I found some info here:
        http://www.geocities.jp/lightofphial/berucha/tvb3.htm

is it the one you were referring to?

        Posted by xkazemg | February 5, 2012, 10:38 am
      • Yes, and according to the page, they made shojo manga champ contests twice. I missed both. sigh.

        Posted by mattari | February 7, 2012, 4:20 am
      • Wow… that was interesting : )
I just did a random search on Suzuki Megumi (twice the TV Champion in shoujo manga and an associate author of “このマンガがすごい!”… not to mention her own blog which shows off her vast knowledge of shoujo manga…. WOW! ^^

Since we are on the subject, wonder what you think of the TV show, “BSマンガ夜話”? I watched a few (very old!) episodes featuring some of the famous/ not-so-famous shoujo manga… I am amazed and impressed by how a show could be carried in nearly an hour, with discussions from a round table of “experts”/ colleagues/ enthusiasts focussing on only ONE manga title per episode…. and I love the fact that there was quite a few “underrated” series being discussed in the series…. .

      • Sorry to be late to reply.
BS Manga Yawa is on a pay channel that I have no subscription. So I’ve never watched it.
Besides, to be honest, I cannot help suspecting that men’s taste on shojo manga may be different from women’s, if subtly, deep down. So, generally, when I look for a new piece to read, I trust Amazon’s reader reviews and laywomen’s blogs more than what male critics say.

      • Omg! I really thought I have replied to your msg but instead I have not and I only realised it just now! So stupid of me!!!! Sorry X 1000000!!!!

re men’s taste on shoujo – well, let’s say their responses to shoujo manga romance are typically very different to ours; I personally tested that on my “significant other 1/2″ and some close male relatives : )

But going back to BS Manga Yawa, now that you mentioned, the commentators (all males, surprise surprise) seems to be mostly discussing the technical aspects of the manga series. For instance there was a mini-section in the show hosted by 夏目房之介 (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%A4%8F%E7%9B%AE%E6%88%BF%E4%B9%8B%E4%BB%8B) which analysed manga series by the paneling, speech patterns, and other manga technique. They did not often do shoujo manga in the show (for obvious reason). If they did, it was on the more “classic” and famous ones (e.g. “From Eorica With Love”, “Glass no Kamen”, etc)
I have yet to watch a series where this round-table of men would discuss over a romantic shoujo such as Candy Candy (regardless of its court case)… or some melodrama like UEHARA Kimiko’s mari-chan series….???? That would be quite something : )
